How do you soften this room that echos and feels so impersonal?
Is this going to cost me a fortune with the amount of fabric we will need with the 250 foot wall height?
These questions are all too familiar to those of you who live in these voluminous floor plans where the living room is the height of the second story.
The answer: it doesn't have to be intimating and unaffordable!
We help homeowners in this situation often, but rarely do we remember to take photos! Well, here is a recent 2 story room we completed... even though my camera flash did not flatter the detail of the valance in the greatroom, you can see the same valance design below that was repeated in the dining room/breakfast area.
This couple was so much fun! They moved here from Europe to be closer to their children- who doesn't love that? I loved their energy and they even served us a glass of cold water that they added bubbles to! I didn't know those machines existed. Okay, yes adding bubbles to water gets us off the topic so let's talk more about these window coverings.

We did single panels of red luxurious fabric along the sides of the valance in the great room to bring the volume down and soften the sides. The owners had tinted the windows to deflect some of the light and that was all they needed to continue to enjoy their view!
The best part... the couple picked this design themselves so they should be proud to say they had a big hand in the way the fabrics were pulled together with a compromise from the battle of the sexes of what should be. She wanted swags and he wanted boxed pleats... so we met in the middle and found something they both could enjoy!
Hinda & Gill, you are both so much fun! I wish you well in your new home and welcome to the Texas heat! :) Have a great week & enjoy your kids and grandchild!
